Plan and shoot with shot lists

A shot list in FirstSlate is not a static document. It lives on the project, so it knows the shoot, and you check shots off as you capture them instead of tracking coverage in your head or on a printed page.

Where to find it

Open a project and use the Shot List card on the Project Hub (Build Shot List or Open Shot List), or go to Dashboard → Shot Lists to see every list across your projects with its capture progress.

Build a shot list

Start from New shot list, pick a project, and add shots by hand with Add shot. Each shot carries:

• Setup (a segment or location, like "Keynote" or "B-roll around venue") for grouping
• A description
• Camera and movement
• A Must / Nice priority toggle
• A status: Planned, Captured, Skipped, or Retake

Shots are grouped on screen by their setup, so a multi-camera or multi-location day reads as clear sections instead of one long list. A project can hold as many shot lists as you need, for example one per shoot day.

Illustrate shots with the framing library

Every shot can carry a small framing diagram so you and your crew see the intended composition at a glance instead of parsing text. Click the diagram thumbnail next to a shot to open the picker and choose from about a dozen curated presets (Establishing, Wide, Medium-wide, Medium, Interview left third, Interview right third, Medium close-up, Close-up, Close-up left third, Extreme close-up, Over-the-shoulder, Two-shot, Profile, Insert). Each preset renders as a live diagram, not a stock photo, so there is nothing to upload.

Draft a starting list with AI

Generate with AI drafts a set of suggested shots from the project's brief, which you review, edit, and trim before keeping. It is a Pro and Studio feature; on Free the button is visible but prompts an upgrade, and you can still build the full list by hand with the framing picker.

Check shots off on set (Field Mode)

Switch the Edit / Field toggle at the top of the builder to Field for a phone-friendly, big-tap-target view. Tap the circle next to a shot to mark it captured; use the row's menu for Planned, Needs retake, or Skipped. If the list has more than one camera, a Camera filter narrows the view to a single camera's shots. Each tap saves immediately rather than waiting on the normal autosave, so a check-off is not stuck in an unsaved draft if you close the tab or move on to the next shot right after tapping.

The header always shows progress as captured / total, with any open must-have shots called out separately so you can see at a glance what still needs to be covered before you wrap.

How it connects to the project

The Shot List card on the Project Hub shows live progress and links straight into the builder. The dedicated Shot Lists page rolls up every list across your projects the same way, so you can jump into whichever shoot day needs attention without opening the project first.

Plan availability

Shot lists, unlimited lists per project, Field Mode check-off, and the framing library are available on every plan, including Free. AI draft generation is Pro and Studio only. See plans and limits for the full comparison.

Common questions

Does editing a list after shots are captured erase my progress?

No. Saving preserves the status of every existing shot; only new or removed rows change.

Can my crew check shots off themselves?

Not yet. Today, check-off happens in Field Mode while you are signed in. A shareable link for crew to check off their own assigned shots is planned but not available yet.

Does the shot list replace the call sheet?

No, they serve different purposes. The call sheet covers logistics (who, where, when); the shot list covers what you're capturing. Build either one first, they live independently on the same project.
