Clients & Portal
Manage your client roster
Add clients, attach them to projects, and keep contact and billing details up to date.
Updated 2026-07-10
Your client roster is the book of business behind every project. Each client can hold multiple contacts and billing details, and every project you create links back to one client. Clients never log in to FirstSlate. They see proposals, invoices, call sheets, and their portal through the links you send them.
Where to find it
Dashboard → Clients. Switch between grid and list layouts with the view toggle above the roster, whichever is easier to scan.
Add a client
Click Add client to open the new client form:
- Company / brand name (required).
- Contacts: add one or more people at the client, each with a name, title, email, and phone. The first contact you add is the primary contact. Click Add another contact for more.
- Website (optional).
- Billing address (optional): street, city, state, ZIP, and country.
Click Save client to add them to your roster.
How clients attach to projects
Every project belongs to exactly one client. When you create a project, you choose the client it's for, and the intake link, brief, proposal, and invoice all inherit that client's contact and billing information. From a client's detail page you can also click New project to start a project already scoped to them.
The client detail view
Open a client from the roster to see everything tied to them:
- A stats strip showing Total, Open, and Paid project counts.
- A contacts card, listing every saved contact and the company website.
- A Client portal card, if you use it. See Give clients a portal with every document.
- Their full Projects list, each showing its current stage and a quick action (copy the intake link for projects still waiting on a brief, or view the project once it's underway).
Edit contact info
From the roster or the client detail page, click Edit to reopen the same form you used to add the client. Update the company name, any contact's name, title, email, or phone, the website, or the billing address, then click Save changes.
Plan availability
The Free plan caps your active roster at 3 clients. Pro and Studio have no client limit. See Plans and limits for the full picture, and pricing for current plan pricing.
If you're on Free and at the limit, FirstSlate blocks new client creation until you delete a client with no projects or upgrade. Archiving a client does not free up the limit, the count includes archived clients too. See Archive or delete a client. Nothing you've already built is ever deleted for being over a limit.
Common questions
Do my clients need a FirstSlate account?
No. Clients never log in. They reach proposals, invoices, call sheets, briefs, and their portal through the unique links you send by email or copy manually.
Can one client have more than one contact?
Yes. Add as many contacts as you need when creating or editing a client. The first one you list is treated as the primary contact for emails sent to that client.
What happens to a client's projects if I hit my plan limit?
Plan limits only stop you from creating new clients or projects. Existing clients, their projects, and every document tied to them stay fully visible and usable regardless of your plan.
Can I remove a client entirely?
Yes, with conditions. See Archive or delete a client for how archiving and deleting work.
